1、How to Get Around Shanghai

Getting around Shanghai is quite easy for western visitors. Road signs are in both Chinese and English, as are the signs for the stations ofthe citys ever-enlarging(不断扩大的) subway(地铁) system. At the time of my writing, April 2009, the city is crisscrossed(纵横交错的) by eight subway lines, and the aim(目的) is to double(加倍) that by the opening of the Shanghai Expo(世博会) in May 2010.

Shanghais Subway System

Non-Chinese speakers should have little trouble navigating(航行/认路) the subway. Each station shows maps of the system, with stations listed(列出) in both Chinese and English. On board the trains upcoming(即将到达的) stops are announced(宣布) in both languages, though finding the correct exit(出口) in some of the larger stations can be a challenge( 挑战). At Peoples Square in the heart of the city, it is not unusual to come out at a different exit at each visit.

Shanghais Transport(交通) Card

For those staying a few days or longer in Shanghai, it is worthwhile(值得的) getting a transport card. It can be bought at subway stations and some convenience(便利) stores, and can be used for travel on the subway, most buses and in taxis. The fare is taken away directly(直接地) from the card as it is passed through the card reader(读卡器) at the entrance(入口) to subway stations and by the door on buses.
